I can't believe they're back!!! :mad2: At the end of last summer, the pond snails (that had hitched a ride on some plants I got earlier in the season) were clogging up my pumps, all over my waterfall and carpeting my stream bed.

I took my plants out of the pond and overwintered them in a rubbermaid tub. I drained the pond for the winter.

In the spring, I filled up the pond again, and re-potted all the plants. I even put coppersafe in the rubbermaid tub just in case some of the snails had survived the winter....... WELL THEY DID!!!

I just noticed snails on the walls of my pond again... I went to the pond supply store, and they suggested super-salting the water since snails do not like water. They also suggested that I wash all the plants with something called safe r soap. I must mention that I do not have fish in the pond. I bought comets earlier in the year and had been overwintering them in a 90gal aquarium, planning to put them into the pond this summer, but I need to get rid of these snails before I do..

I am seriously thinking of ditching my plants, but they were so expensive. Is there anything I can do now, before the snails really get out of hand. I would say they are out of hand already...

Any help would be appreciated. Our pond is 6x6x3ft.

Thanks,
Michele

since snails do not like water

Oops, meant to say since snails do not like salt...

Thanks Lupin,

I think that I am going to try that with the plants in a storage tub, and then actually get into the pond , and scrub down the liner to detach any snails, and eggs while scooping them up with a pool skimmer. That's the only way I can see doing it safely.

I don't really want to add any chemicals or salt to the water since birds (and my dog) regularly drink from it.

I haven't had the waterfall or stream going for 2 weeks because I don't want the snails "gunking" them up. I'll keep them in the pond till I get the population down, or hopefully eradicated....(maybe)

David, her problem was that the snails seem to clog her pumps although if it were not the problem, I'd just let nature take its course.

If the weather are warm in your area or during the summer season, why don't you put some freshwater fish like clown loaches in there. Three or four of them will decimate the pond snail population. I had a 10 gallon aquarium that overran with pond snails and when I put two small loaches in there for a few months, all the snails were gone for good.
