My girlfriend has a 1 gallon betta tank and a Red Sea Nano filter. The betta hates the motion of the water, even with it turned to minimum flow. There's a smallish banana plant in the bottom that he hides behind while the filter is running.

Are there any small floating plants that would do well to lessen the impact of the filter's water output? I'm thinking java fern after doing a bit of searching, but I really don't know plants that well. Even a silk plant idea would be nice.

java fern

i have had the philipine java fern for almost 10 years it grows wherever you put it.it even does well foating around. iam sure other java ferns are very similiar

We have a betta in a 2.5 gallon standard aquarium. I'd recommend moving him into that, as our Red Sea Nano Filter doesn't create as strong a current in there as it would in a 1 gallon tank. Set to the lowest setting, it's almost non-existent. Plus why not give the guy a little more room for 8 bucks?

Now as far as how to make the current less should you choose to keep the 1 gallon, you could try tying a sponge (the little black cartridge sponge that is meant for the filter works great for this) to the outflow. That works for us with our Penguin 100.

Plants? Definately a java fern. Those things could probably grow in a tub of salt. As far as their ability to hinder currents, it's doubtful. You might actually be better of using an ornament or piece of driftwood for that purpose.

I had the 1 gallon tank for a bit before giving it back to my girlfriend. I have my betta going into a 3 gallon Eclipse today.

I'll look into a larger tank tonight when I head to the store, but bookshelf space may become an issue for her.

A 2 gallon would be nice, and you already have the filter so it shouldn't be too pricey. I woudl also suggest if you can, to get a heater for it. My betta's never did well until I kept the water around 78F or so.
