Tiger Barbs prefer calmer water?

I recently changed the direction of my fulval output. My set up used to have the AC110 on the right side of the tank along with an airstone, and the fulval on the left with the output at around the middle of the tank pointed towards the left of the tank. This provided good surface agitation and seemed to move the water throughout the tank.

After noticing less "stuff" in my fulval filter then in my AC110, I redirected the output of my fulval towards the center of the tank. This resulted in the entire left side of the tank with little currents and surface agitation.

All of my barbs hang out on the left side of the tank now! They do venture to the right, but sure seem to prefer the left!

Tiger Barbs are river fish and are designed for current. I have a rather strong current in my Barb tank and the barbs swim all over the tank though they seem to prefer the middle and bottom. I rarely see them up top except during pecking order fights and feeding time. I assume they are just getting used to the change and will return to normal shortly.
