I've just set up a new 36 gal bow front. I'd like to put a small school of tiger barbs (8-12) but want some variety. Any suggestions on tank mates? I was thinking of maybe 2 or 3 silver dollars or a couple of blue rams.

I've got a 200 Peguin bio-wheel on this tank. Black gravel, two medium sized pieces of drift wood (soaked but still releasing some tannins) and about 8 varius sized fake plants.

Thanks for your comments/suggestions. :) :)

Silver dollars grow too big for a 36gal. Do you want another schooling fish?? Or one more solitary fish (or pair). Rams are too timid to be in the same (small) tank with Tiger barbs. A little large cichild maybe?? Pair of Jewel or FireMouths?? A school of Zebra or Pearl danios?? A school of Diamond, Serpia, Head & Tail Lights, Black tetras, ect??

I would get a pair of some small cichlid that could fend for himself.

krib, FM, jewel, convict come to mine.

Or you could get a school of some sort of cory cat for the bottom of the tank

I had Bolivian rams in with tiger barbs(long story) I removed the tiger barbs..the rams were trying to kill them.

besides..I like the rams better.

usually tho you can mix them with other barbs..but generally they are best in a species only tank.(mix the colors is my suggestion)

Hi Robin, I have a pair of kribensis and a bristlenose plec in with my tiger barbs and they get along fine. I've also know someone who has silver tipped tetra in with thiers. Whatever you put in with them just keep an eye on them.
Steve.

I think a mixture of barbs always looks great.

a not-so aggressive cichlid like a firemouth or one of the numerous Cryptoheros sp. would loko nice, especially Hounduran redpoints

black ruby barbs or my favorite Odessa barbs
maybe a clown pleco i think the need drift wood so you have that
6 panda corys
upside down cats 4-5 maybe nice
Kribs are nice too
i have never seen then in a store but red flag cichlid Laetacara dorsigera or Aequidens dorsiger but i usually don't look at them since most are aggressive but starting to appreciate them now
