Most pictures of green star polyps look bigger though. I got this frag for only $5 so I got it not knowing anything about them really..

Is it a particular species or something? Will the polyps get bigger? I don't really want a big mat of this stuff all over the rock - from the pics I saw they looked more like a bush of some sort..

Heres pics under a couple different lights..

Yes, you've got green star polyps. As they thrive the purple matting will spread. Typically, though, the green star polyps when extended and increased in number, will practically conceal the matting so that it appears like a thick green swaying 'lawn of grass'.

yes it is gsp and yes it will spread all over the rock. if you don't want it to i'd pull that frag off the rock and just set it on the sand and let it fill in on the piece of rubble it's on. or you could attach that frag to a small rock and set it out in the sand and let it over take the rock and just have a nice shaggy gsp rock in front (that's what i have).

Ok thanks guys.. yeah the putting them in the sand part sounds like a good idea.. what I did today was stick them on the side of the tank near the back.. I have MH lights but its definitely a low light, low flow area.. so i am hoping they will grow there..

It is hard because I don't want to spend alot of money on corals since I don't have any experience with them yet, but I only have a 12 gallon, so I don't want to use up all my real estate with crappy corals..

okay, those are not GSP.

right off the bat if you look at yers, and then look at Vorlxs', you see his have a white ball in the center w/ the arms radiating out.

alls star polups have this, and yours does not.

id say they are a pipe organ

STAR POLYPS ALL have the white button in the middle

also, the arms are flat and the edges of yours have lil filaments, GSP has smooth cyndrical arms

Yes, you are right, there are brown/orange filaments along the arms. Also, the mat doesn't seems gray, not purple.

Unfortunately for me, this coral has much higher lighting needs than star polyps, and direct lighting is recommended.

I dont know where yer at lighting wise, but those things took off like weeds in my 18 gal w/ a 96watt 10000k PC.

sooooooo, they might be fine.
