The Best Filter for a 10 Gallon Goldfish Tank

a 10 gallon isn't big enough for a goldfish. However, if you were to put a goldfish in a 20 gallon tank, my best advice is to double up on the recommended size filter for the tank... they usually tell you somewhere on the box that the filter comes in, and then follow up with regularly scheduled weekly water changes.

I have a 10 gallon Goldfish tank. I have a Whisper 20 filter on it, but I was wondering, what is the best filter for my tank. I want a Tetratec. Has anyone had any expiereance with the Tetratec? The model PF 150 is what I am talking about.

I have never had the 150, But I do have the PF300. I like the filter, especially the heater module. That's one less thing to take up tank space, It also keeps the tank looking less cluttered (no cords inside the tank). I'm sure the PF150 will be just as nice.

Dont' be rude. It's uncalled for.

well they didn't actually say multiple.. just that it was a goldfish tank. hopefully there is just one in there, but you never know what the jerk at wal-mart (or wherever) told the poor consumer.

the best thing to do is get a filter that will handle 2-3 times the amount of water in your tank, if not more. goldfish are notoriously messy fish and to keep one (hopefully not more) in a 10 gallon tank will require a lot of maintenance to keep it healthy. eventually it will get way too big for the tank and will need a larger home.

There is two in there. They are 1 inch long. It's better than the 2.5 gallon that I saved them from!!!! Please don't be mean to me like in my other thread "Tankmates For Goldfish". Please read it and tell me what you think about what graphic said. It made me cry. Literally. I read on www.tetra-fish.com that a 1 inch goldfish need 3 gallons of water per fish. I will upgrade to a 20 high soon in about 6 months!!! The people at the petstore I go to have these in bowls so I am lucky they lived this long!!! I was also told by my very close friend that is an aquariust at the local aquarium that they would fit perfect. He also has aquariums that are 5 and 10 gallons with goldfish in it.

that's definitely better than a 2.5 gallon tank. and while 3 gallons of water for a 1" goldfish is probably plenty, those little guys won't be that size their entire lives. you have some time, since in a 10 gallon they should be ok for a while (several months at least?). most goldfish will get very large (6"+, and that may be a conservative estimate. others will know better) over time and will eventually need that larger tank you have planned.

make sure you clean your tank well and have a real good filter on there and it wll buy you plenty of time to upgrade to larger tanks as you need them. although that is absolutely the more expensive way to go. essentially you'll have bought one tank the right size and 1 or 2 smaller ones by the time they are full grown.

anyway, don't get discouraged. Some people come off a little harsh because theyr'e passionate about their fish (am I right?) and hate to see fish that will grow large in a small tank just because some guy at the store said they would be fine. If you care for your fish properly and upgrade their home as needed you'll get many many years of enjoyment out of them :)
