I have a tetra tank and recently noticed a missing neon. I assumed it must have died but I cannot find the dead fish anywhere. I even looked around the tank area so it could not have jumped out. The only other fish large enough to be able to eat it is a black skirt tetra. Has anyone ever observed a tetra eating another smaller tetra?

What sizes are all your tetras? I am assuming your smaller tetra's body simply decompose in a matter of time considering smaller bodies decompose quite quickly.;)

ive seen neon tetras picking at a dead one at the fish store.... so its possible but one would think that it would take time...

ive also seen a goldfish eat a whole other gold fish too... that was fun. he eventually got ot the point where the eye was the only thing left and he would just pick it up and spit it out for days....(grade 10 ecosystem experiament)

When you do a gravel vac you'll find him. I know once a fish dies basically any fish will peck at him sorry didn't mean to get graphic. I know that you have to keep tetras in schools especially serpaes because they can get a little fin nip happy. I have all my tetras in schools of 4 and they have been doing fine my neons basically stay together. Sorry for your loss but you will probably find the one that died on your next water change.

Fish will eat other fishes....Just a fact of life. If a fish dies it will become food for other fishes.

I agree^

More importantly you should test your water, to find out if the cause of death was water quality related or if the dead fish caused any problems. It is not likely that there was any significant ammonia spike that your tank couldn't handle because it's a little fish, but just in case...
