soo cool i found a pond with hundreds of tadpoles. I couldn't resist putting a few in to one of my tanks, after the giant Danios feeding frenzy, the tadpoles stuck themselves to the glass like a pleco. others seem to be eating the LONG HAIR ALGE :) could this be? could i have solved part of the alge problem (least till they grow legs)? does anybody know if they will turn to the plants when the alge is gone? does anybody know about tadpoles in the aquarium? would love to hear from anybody who might have a clue :hi:

I've kept a few tadpoles (western toad) before in an aquarium. They will eat algae and other microscopic organisms in the water. They also like to eat fish food like flakes, brine shrimp, blood worms, though I'm not sure if they are good for them. Be sure to provide a place for them to get out of the water once you start seeing legs. At the first sign of legs, you should have a floating "island" for them to get on to. I'm not sure if they will eat plants or not, but I think they won't as long as you provide them with enough algae or other food.

Err, they probably will eat plants. Tadpoles eat anything. I fed mine chunks of lettuce, they gobbled it up. It might depend on the type of frog?

They eat mostly algae at the beginning stages but will take anything. As the progress and develope legs, they need more and more meaty foods and soon give up thte vegetarian diet. Once they get 4 sets of legs, if they no longer take frozed worms, u'll have to set the free at that point in a local pond. Hopefully they are a native species.

Do supplement the tadpole's diet with fresh veggies such as lettuce and cucumbers. Mine certainly didn't tear up the plants, but it was a really small tadpole and even when the tadpole was transformed into a toad it was less than an inch long. I wonder if they will take live brine shrimp or tubifex worms?

they are definality a native species of florada frog, and so far most have fallen prey to the Giant danios, they love a chase :D i think a few might make it, then i plan to release them back, kinda neat to watch mother nature at work in my aquarium. i usually put veggies in for the platties, and blood worms, regularly so i bet they get big fast as for as land maybe floating lettus leaves just till i can catch them and put them in to the release bucket. dont want froggies jumping round the house, or anything. thnks for all the info.

Alright I recently aquired a tadpole so I'm adding to this thread.

I caught mine with a bunch of little water bugs. So far the bugs haven't attached to the tadpole or anything. Based on the way they move I'd guess they're backswimmer larvae or something related. They're tiny (less than 1 mm) and redish orange. Should I seperate the tadpole and bugs? Will the tadpole eat the bugs? I left them together in case the bugs are a food source. This tadpole is really really tiny too (probably around 4mm counting tail). Will it still eat algae and veggies? The tank it's in doesn't have much for algae but I could scrape some from other tanks and put it in.

Thanks for all your help. Raising tadpoles has been kind of a childhood dream of mine. :p:
