When setting up an aquarium, most discussions revolve around filtration, lighting, and fish compatibility. But have you ever considered the role of tablecloths in your setup? Whether you're placing your tank on a dining table, stand, or custom-built surface, a tablecloth might seem like an unusual addition—but could it have a purpose?

Some hobbyists use tablecloths under smaller tanks to protect furniture from spills and scratches. Waterproof or plastic-coated table covers can offer a layer of protection against moisture damage. Others believe that fabric tablecloths could help with minor vibrations, especially on delicate surfaces.

On the flip side, a thick or uneven tablecloth might cause stability issues, especially for larger aquariums that need a perfectly level surface. Some argue that direct contact with a solid, flat stand is the best approach for weight distribution.

What do you think? Have you ever used a tablecloth under or around your aquarium? Share your experiences!

No- my tanks go on either their own stands or on surafaces on which water is not an issue. Think melamine, granite or formica. I would worry more about the floor around a tank or the carpet on the floor if there is one.

For rimmed tanks only the edge of the fram is in direct contact with the tanks and the table, But that is how metal stands work and I have them as well. The wooden stands I make I paint with an exterior enamel paint to protect them from water.

I've used tablecloths as a tank background but not so much as a stand protection barrier. I have both wood & metal stands but never worried too much about them.

I have used a large towel under small aquariums

My very large aquariums have been under styrofoam or under thick wood with tiles that you peel and stick
