I was just admiring my fish and noticed some unusual (nothing I'd seen in my tank before) activity in the group of platys. The males are chasing after the females relentlessly, lol. It's a sad, pathetic sight, really :P

The male's tails are a bright red now, is this normal during breeding behavior? And if this is infact mating activity, how long can I expect before seeing fry? I'm not interested in keeping any, really... but I know my angels would love a snack such as this :D

The platys have been in the tank for several weeks and this is the first time I've noticed this. How many times a year do they normally breed? And is it possible for the 2 males to mate with all 6 females at once? That's a whole lotta fry!

You will have a lot of fry. The two males will mate with all of the females. Each female can have up to 60 fry every 3 to 6 weeks.

Hi there,
platys breed all the time. Every chance they get. With as many females as possible. Mine are _always_ chasing each other around, and constantly pregnant (though the fry almost always get eaten before I can even see them, I just wake up and notice that a previously huge female is now thin and no one seems interested in breakfast!)
Your angels will definitely enjoy having a constant source of live food.

same thing

yeah Ive had three platies in my tank for about six months now. ive never seen a baby, but ive heard that kribensis relish them so that explains it I guess.

I have a female platy who had fin rot so I isolated her put her back in the tank (55 gal) with her previous friends including a male and one more female(pregnant imagine that) but now they are all chasing each other ? The male chases the females the female chases the other female what happened?
