Okay...let's all pretend I know what I'm doing hahahha
I have "plumbed" my sump and hopefully will not have any leaks.
I would like for anybody who knows anything about sumps to please
let me know if this looks right to them. Also, the pump I am using is
a Gundoff's Silent aquarium pump 115 V, 60Hz. I have a 72 gallon bowfront with a 20 gallon sump ( I think! ) Will this be enough pump to
circulate the water??? Thanks for your help!

Looks pretty good. I guess 72 G Reef Ready? I have one sitting in the house dried for now filled with dried equipment
1. I would get the strip away from sump. Can you imagine that strip falling into sump?
And it can happen!!! Put it on the back/side of cabinet permanently.
2. I dont know the max capacity of your pump at your tank height (distance) from
pump. Can you post.
3. I cant see if you attached filter socks on drain in the sump (micro filtration which will help with crystal clarity of water to a point some may even bump their head into the tank.
4. If you can devise a lid(s), such will minimize evaporation and salt build bu all over, especially near where water is splashed. All you need is some plexiglass or better yet some acrylic. LMK if need ideas.

5. This is not that important but can use non rust material clamps when and if possible.

6. Most importantly, Can you just shut the pump to see high high water level gets in the sump. Only way to determine in case of power failure when not at home to ensure water does not oveflow in sump.

How about pics of the tank?

Okay...so far...

It's a freshwater tank. I am just using the sump for additional water and possibly filtration system in I decide to go that way. I just wanted to be able to use the overflow and not have "ugly" system stuff in my display tank. Right now, things look REALLY bad. The water is super dark and I still have dirt floating around....I do NOT have filter socks on it...is that a reef item or can I use those in freshwater too? I got the strip permanently mounted as you suggested and am trying to get the wires and such out of waters way. I'm not sure I understand the question about max capacity...but, I'll try to tell you what I think you want to know! The pump sits about 2' from the bottom of the tank and about 35" away from where the overflow on the tank is. Does that help? Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it!

what he is saying is he wants you to be able to shut the sumps pump off in the middle of normal use and let the water from the tank drain down to the sump... and check to see that the sump can catch all of the excess water from the tank going to the sump before it overflows. That way in case of a power outage you do not overflow your sump and have a big wet mess in your house

You want the sump to be able to hold all of the water that is going into the overflow untill it gets down to a level where it is not going into the overflow anymore or into the sump.. depending on what your drain set up is...

ps how did you get your water so brown?

you can use filter socks on freshwater but i would suggest getting at least a couple of them so you can change them out every few days...
they can be washed and reused but you want them to always stay pretty clean. (i use them on my planted freshwater system and i love em)

you also need some bio media

Planted freshwater...

Yes, that is what I'm supposed to be doing is a planted freshwater. I accidentally fried my water. I put in these new titanium heaters and didn't have the instructions for them and didn't know that the "probe" thingies were actually part of the thermostat to tell the heaters when to come on....so the next morning....I got up and there was steam coming off of the tank. I KNOW...I'm an idiot. I was just SO thankful that I figured it out before I got fish. I guess I should probably start over...maybe I have done too much damage to the potting soil / plants / water ???? I don't know. All I know is that I hand carried 72 gallons of water to that spot ( my NEW stupid faucet won't allow me to attach my python to it ) and I don't want to start over. I was trying to do the Diana Walstead method of a little bio environment without filtration....put in 2" of potting soil, then 2" of gravel, plants and fish and let them be their own eco system. But, I don't think turning the heat on the tank to 107 degrees was included in that system. Anyways....enough of telling on my self. I will get it figured out eventually...with you all helping me! And yes, I promise not to get fish until I figure it out! :)

you learned a most important lesson and that is READ the instructions BEFORE using a item no matter how much you think you know already.

your sump plumbing looks fine. when the water drains from your tank what is it filtered thru before your pump returns it back to the tank? filter floss?

and how many gallons per hour is your pump rated for?

i will post a pic of my wet/dry sump filter i use and i use both types so you get a idea of maybe what your missing for your water to be filtered thru AND yes you can use SOCKS they just arent for salt water filters. Marine depot has them on sale buy 1 get 1 free now i would suggest having at least 4 on hand.

and if it was me i would do 25% water changes daily until that water clears up and hold off on fish until you get this settled.

Right now there is NOTHING filtering anything! Suprising I know! hahahha
Seriously is there anyone on here who has done this method and been successful?
I've read other people ( not on this site ) who have tried it and had success, but
I'm sure they didn't try to boil water in their aquariums either! :(
I will get a water change done tomorrow....possibly even just start over....just hated to do it with having to hand carry it all...but, oh, well...if I must, I must.
Oh...I don't know how to tell how many gallons the pump is rated for? Where do I find that information?
I will go and get some filtration material tomorrow too!
Thanks for all your help again!

i will tell you this... good luck on the walstead method... i think "low tech" tanks are harder to do than "high tech". they are cheaper but too many uncontrolled variables for me... ;) i have done low tech and high tech and prefer the latter much more

also maybe try an easy floating plant that will oxygenate water very well and choke out excess light like watersprite.

"Easy" method....

Yeah....I'm thinking I'm gonna change out all of the water today and start over. I just feel bad that I got the water so hot....so, it's not fair to the "Easy method" to do it wrong! I will let you know how it works out! I may add the sock though, just to help filter out some of the dirt! ;)

Sump is running!

Okay...so I changed the water, probably 85% and got my sump running. I was originally going to do the same thing in the sump that I did in the tank, so that is why there is dirt floating around in there....also why I have the canister filter thing shoved in the end of the sump to keep dirt out of the pump. IT is running fine, although VERY loud. I read about a Durso stand pipe and wouldn't mind making one of my own.
