Hello Peoples!!

I'm new here and have a couple questions....
My tap water here is kind of nasty. I don't even like showering in it, but I do. hehehehehe

Would it be OK if I started using spring water for water changes? Is this a bad idea? I heard that distilled water was a bad idea.
My tank (20g) has been up and running for about 3 months. It took about 9 weeks to cycle. I'm assuming that it may have something to do with the water quality. I tested the water straight from the tap and PH and all were just fine. It has a slight hazy to look at it though.
Could this be why my tank took so long to cycle? Yes I did cycle with fish. I know....don't smack me too hard. But I did do regular water changes and didn't lose a single fish, even though they probably aren't in the best of health because of not doing a fishless cycle.

The whole reason for switching to spring water would be purely for cosmetics. The fish all seem fine, but the water is hazy.

Thanks a bunch!!!
You people are GREAT!!!!!
I've learned so much from everyone here.

what do you mean spring water? are you literally going to go out to a spring and gather it? or are you talking about bottled water that some marketing guy slaps a label on that says "spring water" even though its just tap water...

personally I'd say get your tap water tested and correct any problems it has before you start worrying about your fish.

What do you mean by hazy? Try taking a clear glass and fill it up and let it sit for a while and see if its still hazy. What kind of filter system? Does the water clear after water changes at all?

Was it a new or used tank? Did you wipe the glass down prior to set up?

Not sure about spring water but trying to give food for thought.

It's like the water isn't clear. It kind of looks like it's still cycling even though it isn't. It will look that way before and after water changes.

It's actually my son's tank. It's one of those Top Fin complete setups with the filter and heater and everything. I replaced the heater with a better one. I figured the filter that it came with, Top Fin 20, was not good enough so I bought him another one to add to it. An AquaClear 150, so now it has both filters on it.

yup we have pretty hazy tap water ourselves, and it usually stays cloudy for a week or so and then it clears up, but we have to do a water change then its :sad

There are special filter out there that are great and taking particulate matter out of water. Diatom filters I believe. Not sure if they would work in this case.

geoff is correct. Spring bottled water is almost like tap water. I also have tested delivered bottle water at my neighbor's house. Not much different from my own tap water. I saw where someone mentioned they purchased a filter from Home Depot just to take out those nasty bits before your tank filter has to do the job and clog up fast.

carbon in filter?

I'd think that if you add carbon to your filter that would clear rapidly. You do need to change the carbon weekly.

You can try a RV water filter (RV section of walmart) about $17 and lasts for something like 500 gallons of water, or more, I forget.

So I might as well just purchase the "Spring Water" even though it's just clean tap water. Does that mean that if I use that, I no longer need to use the dechlorinating stuff?

Or should I use it just in case?

You can dechlorinate regular tap water by simply letting it sit out for 24 hours. Might aerate it once in a while...
