smart fish

Probably the Elephant Nose fish....though cichlids as a whole are the smartest fish.

Not currently. They require specialized setups, since pretty well any mobile inverts and fish may become snacks, they are strong and smart enough to get out of a tank (including pushing off a top weighted down with bricks), and the natural life span for most species is 12-24 months--hard to have such a cool pet and have it die in such a short time span. As more and more are being aquacultured, it's easier to select species, so I might get another one down the line since I will be able to get a male, which do live longer.

Not sure if they are smart but discus will sit and watch you, and if they see you have a yellow ziplock bag they know it is frozen food time and freak out.

Paradise Fish and the Mormidaes (I'm not even sure that's what their called... but it's the baby whale/ elephant nose group).

All my Cichlids are pretty smart. They all know when it's feeding time.I keep their pellets in a Ziplock storage container, and when I pull that out, they all get very excited. :dance2:

Well i think the male betta is, because they all have their own personalitys no matter what.
