I've seen a lot of posts on Black Ghost Knifefish, and I've looked through a ton of old posts in the search function, but I can't find a good answer to one question. What is the smallest tank size that I could responsibly keep a Black Ghost Knife in? I'd like to do a planted tank with just the Ghost in it, maybe a few snails for clean-up. Thanks!

Probably 75g

You could probably have a baby in a smaller tank for awhile, but you would eventually need a 75 or larger. I have one in a 75g now, but if he geta about a foot, then he will get a 125 or more.

I wouldn't put babies in a grow-out tank, because it is more responsible to have him in his habitat 100% stabilized before hand. Even though he is still small, stunting may occur.

Thanks all, I guess a BGK will have to be a long term planning fish. Hopefully next year I'll be able to add a nice big 70-80 gallon to my existing 55.

As already said, they can grow to about 20" long, so should probably be in a tank around 6'x2'x2', but bigger would be better.

I wish I had known of this site before I bought my BGK. The LFS I went to (and don't go to anymore for more reasons than just this one) told me that a 29g was more than sufficient. He's still ok for the moment, but, yes, I need to get a bigger tank so he can be happier. Still working on that with my better half. If I can't get a bigger tank in the next few months, I'm going to have to put him up for adoption.

It's too bad. I love Mac (the Knife). :(
