I'm new to shrimp and I'm so afraid of sucking these little guys up in the siphon. They blend in with the gravel and are hard to see, and they aren't shy either. Do you put netting over the nozzle? Just wondering what's the best way.

I've done that!

But now I have strong enough filters with my ton of plants and never need to vacuum. Never anything on the bottom..

Ah, I didn't realize gravel vac & siphoning were two different things. I meant gravel vacuuming then. I have snails too and they crank out a lot of waste.

You start a siphon to gravel vac but you have the attachment on the end. You can't use a fish net if you use a gravel vac as no solids will be sucked up by it! I don't gravel vac my shrimp tanks as I only use a very thin later of gravel, which is why my picture above only shows the hose, with no gravel vac attachment. The way around this would be to use a net with larger holes, if you can find one! :)

I have some extra netting from my BioMax that has fairly large holes--hopefully not large enough for shrimpies to pass through. I'm going to rubberband it over the nozzle and give that a shot. Getting really tired of using the turkey baster.
