Has anyone had experience with Silver Tip Tetras? I've found very little information on them. Some resources explain that they are wonderful for a community tank while others seem to suggest that they are quite aggressive towards other fish of similar size and often bully on one member of the school (though a few of these accounts mentioned only having 2 or 3 fish... do you think a small school is the issue? Because if I got them I would get 11... So, what do you think?) Thanks so much in advance for any and all information.

Ok, someone has to know something about this. I don't mean to be impatient but the threads dissapear so quickly on this site if people don't reply and I've done as much research as I could, including books, not just net, and I truly can't find much info so I'm looking for some personal experience. Has anyone ever owned or known someone who owned or owns, Silver Tip Tetras? I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some info about their behavior in a community setting and whether or not they are aggressive at all. Thanks.

I know you asked for personal experience but I dont have any. Anywho, one
of my books mentions that "They are quite (ie. not exactly lol) a
peaceful fish, but are very inquisitive when there is a new addition to
the aquarium and will probably harmlessly harass it."

So I would assume (also from what I have read online after searching for
Hasemania nana) that they would be somewhat similar to Serpaes
etc (which I have never had issues with) in temperament. However,
you never know I'm afraid.

I do recall seeing these at my LFS and they did look quite pretty.

Sorry I have nothing better :(

Thank you so much for replying. Any information is helpful :)

They are a peaceful fish and will get along with most other fish if the tank is large enough and the school is large enough. Kind of like what tiger barbs do. If the school is big enough then they just harmlessly harrass each other but if there are only a few of them say less then six then they think it is thier duty to pick on every other fish in the aquarium. All in all they are a very pretty fish and will make a nice addition to a community tank if the tank is large enough and the school is maintained in larger numbers.

I have 9 silver tips in a 32 gallon....in my experience they are very aggressive...the only time they school is if they are frightened...other than that...they pick on each other very often...of course the 3 males each have their own territory (except when feeding)...and constantly harass the 6 females...I will say they are quite hardy though....I will be getting rid of them soon...trading for other fish.
One good thing came out of it though.....I ran into a bad algae situation and had to tear down the 32 gallon....in doing so....I discovered a fry!!!...it was about 1/4" long......she is now in with Platies and a couple neons and doing well.

When I first introduced mine into the tank, they were aggressive towards the neons. Then one of them started schooling with the rasboras, and now (4 months later), they are very peaceful. I hope you manage to get a few of each sex... I don't know which is which, but one of the sexes has a nice golden tinge.

Was searching for information on silver tips when I found this thread. I have 4 of them in a 33g tank and 1 is now getting bullied so much by 2 of the others that it often hides on the bottom looking very distressed. I've seen 1 of the tetras hover on top of the bullied tetra......reminds me of the way a dominant dog dominates a submissive member of the pack but don't know if you can apply that to fish!

Normally it wouldn't bother me but the behaviour is so aggressive I'm pretty sure I'm going to find him dead in the next couple of days.

The tetras chase my danios a bit too but they can give as good as they get!

I'm having the same experience with my 4 Silver Tips.
