I am starting to think about my next tank. It will be at least 90 gallons. I like severums. Are they good with tiger barbs? or do they get big enough to eat them? If they work with tiger barbs can you suggest some other tank mates. If severums do not work with tiger barbs could you tell me some cichlids that do? (I have heard of tiger barbs being dithers in some tanks) I am not sure of the set up yet--but thinking sand and gravel, driftwood, some live plants but not heavily planted. Thanks.

I think the barbs will be fine, as long as you have enough. In a 90g, 8-10 of them be would be ideal.
As for other cichlid tankmates
Blue Acara
Festivums
Keyholes (very peaceful)
Sajicas

These are all great cichlids because they are real mild mannered, much like severums except when breeding. (like most cichlids)
Good luck!

Thanks. I will look up the profiles of the other fish you mentioned. Would just one be better or would more be better? I do not want them to have fry because I do not have anything to do with them. So could two females work. Wouldn't two males be to aggressive. (I don't know about the aggression being more with males just a thought)
Thanks

Yes I would get two females if possible. That would be fine. The best thing to do would be get them while they're small, but they can be real hard to sex when they're small. Maybe your LFS could help with that.(If you trust them)

Would some German Blue Rams work with the severums and tiger barbs? I also like the looks of the Blue Acara.

:OT: Very cute dog, Capps!!!

Thanks for your help!

One more thing--I am planning on moving in a year or two. Should I wait to set up the tank when I move. I would really like to get it started now, but I would already be moving a 10 gallon, 20 gallon, 30 gallon. and the 3 cats and 3 dogs.

You can try try the rams but I have never kept them. Maybe someone else can help with that.

As far as moving the tank if it's going to be up for 2 years you are more than likely going to change your mind and decide to keep different fish, so if you do, during the transition just don't restock your tank and it will be easier to move. If you have never moved a big tank before with fish it is a pain in the butt. If i was you I would go ahead and get it set up. That would kill me looking at an empty 90g for 2 years. JMO

Oh and thanks for the compliment on my Boston. She is a real handfull!

Okay. Re-thinking tank size. I think I am going to go with a 55 or 75 gallon now. A couple of questions.

1.) One severum, a school of tiger barbs (at least 7, but more if they will fit), a chinese algae eater, and maybe something else (either another severum, another school, or some rams) I will have at least a 5 time water turnover an hour with the filter. Would this work?

2.) Does the order I add my fish matter? I will be moving the filter and decorations from my 10 gallon tank to the new tank. I wish I did not have to add fish right away, but the new tank will replace the old one's location. So, I will have to add the tiger barbs first, unless I keep them in a rubbermaid container while adding my other fish. I am not sure what would be best. Please suggest what you think would be best.

3.) Also would sand or rounded gravel be better? I like the looks of both.

Thanks :dance2:
