Sea Monkeys?

Not sure if this is accurate, but what we always called sea monkeys are simply Brine shrimp, the oscars would love them. Also try bits of beef liver, not as much fun to watch, but the oscars will like it as a treat. Not to pick on the UK (we love you guys) but how wierd is it to make feeder fish illegal. I would raise guppies and try to get them to live in a community tank with my oscars.

yeah, just read the link you posted. They are simply brine shrimp sold as pets. You can probably buy them labeled as fish food cheaper though :) Brine Shrimp are one of the best fish foods from what I've read but it takes a long time to actually raise them large enough to feed to something like an Oscar. You can buy them frozen or freeze/dried in bottles. They are about the size of the tip of a needle when hatched and the oscars probably wouldn't even see them. My mollies didn't even notice the 3 day old shrimp I fed my community tank. The tetras however loved them. Kyle

I feed nightcrawlers (earthworms) to my pike cichlids and my frontosa. I also fed them to my oscars back when I kept them. Would that be breaking any laws in the UK?

I think Earth worms would be OK.

I went to the lfs and asked if they sold feeder fish. The guy behind the counter said that the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) would revoke his licence if he were to sell me any fish knowing that they were to be raised as food for other fish.

Back to the brine shrimp, I can see you buy them as eggs, anyone got any detail on how to breed them?

there is a lot of information on the internet about raising BS. you can buy kits with eggs and getting them to hatch is v. easy.

thing is they are not very big when hatched so you need to feed them and keep them growing for a while.

i started doing it as i thought it would be a good source of live food, but it was far too much of a pain to be worth it. plus i would have thought oscars would prefer something a little bigger?

HTH

I never had much luck getting them to grow big, they stink really bad too, raising them in the basement will offend other people in the house. nightcrawlers are a good idea, wash them thouroughly before puting them in the tank, crickets are fun too.

i breed guppies and feed them as feeders to my fish in my tanks. i also have some red platys too.

ah i remember when i was little and got a seamonkey kit for 15$ with like 3 months alowance and they were always dead in a week
