I got 3 tiger barbs to help me cycle my tank. Well I have come to the end of my cycle (finally!) and am ready to get my first cichlids: 5 ps. saulosi's (1m/4f)

The problem is that I have gotten attached to the little tigers! I really like the little guys and really dont want to take them back to the pet store (that is what they said I could do).

Soooo, my question is will the tigers be ok with the new cichlids and visa versa?

if your attached to them that you will get more, the tiger barb is a social species that sets up a "pecking order". meaning there is a dominant, a sub dominant, a 3rd 4th 5th etc etc. they are quite aggressive to one another to display this, and youll notice they bite and chase at each other alot. when youve got a small number of them, the 2 beat up the one until it dies, and than the dominant picks on the other until it dies, and than the last one is lonely and might just pine away or something. an acceptable number is typically 6-7, although like an social schooling fish, the more the better.

ive heard of TBs being kept with cichlids since they share aggression, but i dont know about that particular species of cichlid. what is the size of the tank?

Unless you get about 6 large tigers in total, I wouldn't risk it. I'm more concerned about the tigers getting shredded by the cichlids than the other way around. If you have around 6-12, the tigers will jointly defend themselves from slightly bigger fish.

yea, you have a small amount of gallons to work with, really, a 30g is only enough for 1 species of mbuna in most cases, with 4-5 of that species. so your probably already full with the saulosi, so im not sure if id even add tiger barbs in that case.

they could coexist in a 55, but 30just to small,
used to have a few saulosi myself, lived in harmony with 4 tigre barbs,
they did well untill my lombardoi moved in, killed of the saulosi completly,
male and females, but left the tigre barbs to this day, (almost a year now)

i have four tiger barbs with mianganos (3"), demasoni (juvie), saulosi (juvie), afra cobue (juvie), 2 medium sized silver dollars, 4 horseface loaches, eureka red peacock, 6" malawi hap. They do just fine! Actively participate in the feeding frenzy and sometimes they even nip at cichlids. But i do agree with comments on the size of tank.
