when using sand as substrate and making hills, how tall can you build up a hill before it is too much. if the tank is 18inches tall, at what point is too high?

Well depends on your water circulation. I use a mixture of playsand/ flourite black sand. No matter how hilly it was before (due to stirring the sand) it always ends up flat after a few days.
decent circulation, got emperor 400 and penguin 350, as well as a small powerhead on my 55g(which i plan on redoing the substrate and putting sand). I have a decent sized rock cave i put together and i want to put it in the back corner of the tank with sand draping over it, cave in a hill. Just not sure if there is certain height i shouldnt pass with that
