I have a full box of marine salt (instant ocean, i guess) from the time when I used to keep puffers. Well, the box has been sitting on my shelf and I am wondering if I can use it in freshwater aquariums to treat diseases. It upsets me to waste something, I dont want to throw it away, neither know anyone who keeps saltwater aquariums...

So can I use it in my freshwater aquariums when treating diseases?

I sure do think its a possiblity. I would suggest to make sure that salinty (sp?)doesn't get too high for FW. Just dilute it big time... don't ask me what level of salinty or anything I dunno about that *grins*
Lets see what the others have to say!

It is not good to use aquarium salt to treat disease and so on, the reason is b/c it has many minerals in it that will affect the chemistry of the water. Your best bet is to use ordinary tabble salt for treating disease. I am sorry but you would not be wise to use it, I know it seems like a waste but you fish will thank you for it.

does that include salt like dr wellfishes? i use that regularly ...(well for everything from qt to treatment to just cause )...?

Doc Wellfish freshwater aquarium salt is Just Table salt that hasn't passed food grade inspection. In other words it can be used to treat disease if you aren't concerned about what is really in the box. I have never heard of anyone getting bad contaminants from Doc Wellfish, but I do not like putting mystery compounds in my tanks. I use Table Salt for that reason (and of course the price savings)

Saltwater aquarium salt as said is a mineral mix designed to simulate seawater. It contains much more than NACL and in the instance of treatment would not be a good additive because of the other minerals. I'd still keep it for someday, or sell it/ give it away. I never waste anything either.

You could always use it to hatch brine shrimp for your fish to eat.

I hope i dont sound dumb? but ..what do you mean by mytery compounds?

Doc Wellfish's salt does not have to go through the inspection processes that table salt has to go through, and therfore the full contents of the box of salt are really an unknown. Even the impurity levels are not listed unless something has changed since the last time I looked at a box.

As Said I have never heard of anyone having a problem with Doc Wellfish's salt, and I really suspect it is exactly the same thing as our table salt, It's just marketed at a much higher price because they can get away with doing so.
