I was at Meijer and saw a nice 50 gallon Rubbermaid garbage can on wheels. The material was nice rubber not the usual plastic that most garbage cans are made of. I'm under a space constraint so the upright setup works great.

Q:Anybody use one of these for R/O water or any aquarium use? Are they safe to store water in? Are they made from the same rubber as the tubs? It feels the same.

Thanks for any help,
Tom

I use a 32gal from Rubbermaid to mix water in for 2 days at a time. No issues with that. If you are really concerned I would maybe call Rubbermaid or the place that is selling them and ask if it is food safe(may say in product guide or in extra info on their computer), I know the can I use is not labeled as such, but like I said, I have not had problems with it at all(knock on wood). Good luck, How is the tank coming along? Is there anything in it yet?

I use a 30gal trashcan for mixing my sw for water changes. I prefer the round type because they don't bow due to the shape.

Thanks, everybody. I think I'll try my luck at the Rubbermaid 50gal on wheels, but I'll follow your advice and check with the site first.

Hey Matt,
Well, I couldn't wait anymore so I put two fish that were in my jail tanks in. A Clarkii and a bi-color psuedochromis. They've been in for about three or four days I think. Eating and looking great. I also have some corals that were stuck to the LR I bought. Kenya tree, 7 or 8 mushrooms and two mini bubble tips. All are open and doing well so far. I checked all my parameters and they read 0 (Am,Nitrates,Nitrites,Phos,PH@7.9,sg@1026 but gradually reducing it. Very pumped, but have a feeling the cycle isn't complete just yet. Cautiously optomistic. I'm doing the trim work today. I'll post pics when I'm done.
Thanks for asking,
Tom

There was a thread somewhere about using the rubbermaid type containers for sumps. One guy would bolt the lid on and cut openings for equipment and maintiance and the rim of the lid will add support to prevent bowing. I'd be afraid the plastic would start tearing, like our rubbermaid trash cans at work do, by the handles.

I use rubbermaids- Toughies- 32 and 20 gals. Not on wheels, I doubt the wheels will stand up to the weight of water. I use a garden hose and a pond pump to move water from the rubbermaids to wherever I need it.

I also use some of their smaller containers for other fish needs- occasionally as tanks for short periods- have even had surprise fry in one.

Sounds good Tom. Question, why are you lowering your SG?, 1.026 is right on. I hope everything stays happy for you.:)
Matt

For some reason(definitely not scientific) I have the best luck at 1023 in my reefs. Can't explain it, though.
