Hi Friends !

Can a Upside down catfish be kept with Tetras, Corys and other small fishes ?

Also, I heard that there are many species of these and its importnat to identify and buy the 'true' dwarf ones ? Is there any way to identify them ?

Kindly advice.

There are a few different "Up-side down" cats out there. Most are peaceful and can be kept with tetras and cories. Cannot tell you what kind w/o a photo.

Hi Kush- which Synodontis you go for will depend on your tank size and how much you want to pay. True upside-down cats (Synodontis nigriventris) stay small (<3" standard length), but are very social, so need to be kept in groups to thrive; most of the others get to 8" or so (a few around the 1' mark) but can be kept alone, although most of these species don't spend much time upside down. The larger they get, the bigger their mouth, and one or two are quite aggressive (most aren't), but in general they're not predators of fish. Check out the different species on Planet Catfish's Catelog for info on the different species. I've got a featherfin syno (Synodontis eupterus) which is a bit too boisterous and heavy for Corydoras in my opinion, but nigriventris should be OK.

Hi there !

Thanks for caring and for the kind reply. Actually I saw these beauties for the first time in my life and they were really very cute. The dealer said that they were the true dwarfs and will not grow more than 3 - 4 inches. I observed them for some time and they were all continously swimming upside down the whole time.

They were quite expensive too and I thought I'll manage to get about 4.

Should I go for them ? Will they let my Tetras, Shrimps and Corys live in peace ?

Kindly advice. Thanks again for caring.

Friends, I'm going to the shop tomorrow which is about a 2 hour travel. I want to get these upside downs desperately and I request you if someone can kindly help me identify the peaceful species. The delaer says that they are peaceful and the true dwarf varities and will not grow more than 3".

But I dont want to trust him blindly and it will be great if I can identify them correctly. Please help me friends..

Thanks !
Kush

Sorry- missed your reply post Kush. I'd go for them as they are genuinely peaceful- their only downside is that they can be quite shy and they need to be kept with others of their kind. You might need rockwork or bogwood they can hide under as true nigriventris really DO prefer being upside down when they're hiding.
