Red worms in my carbon filter

I felt industrious today and wanted to give my filters a good wash down on all my tanks. My 55 gallon tank came with a surprise. The each filter had a dozen or so bright red LIVING worms of about half an inch in length.

Is this something of concern? A parasite?

Help.

are the larval form of a midge fly, since they're a larva they eventually metamorph into a their adult flying form.

It could be tubifex worms which stay worm like their whole life, and if you feed them live to your fish can become established in the substrate and i'd imagine filter as well.

does one want these worms in the subtrate?

they're filter feeders, so.... ;-) not very attrative. Good fish food though.

This can and probably does happen to some extent when you feed live tubifex worms to your fish... I'd imagine that tank the owner overfed with them...

It happen in my brackish tank so I am guessing it is a brackish question.

Thanks for all the input but the odd factor in this mystery is that I have never fed them worms.

I wonder if one of the new fish or a feeder brought it with them?

Have a nice day.
