Quikrete Playsand for substrate?

Anyone try using this stuff? I wanted to do black sand in my new 29gal and maybe eventually get rid of the black gravel for sand in my 55, but I was at my old job today and they have quite a few bags of this playsand lying around that I can just have if I want them. Bags say prewashed and I'd clean it again to be safe. The color is actually pretty nice its a bit darker then most sand but not close to black. Below is a link of the stuff.

yup alot of people use it but i suggest cleaning it first, other wise it fine.

I have bought that brand of sand before. Not in black..regular tan and I bought it from lowes....

Three words for you WASH, WASH, WASH.

Home Depot sells a 100lb bag of sand by Quikrete. The sand is really uniform in size and color and doesn't take too much washing to get it clean. Play sand seems to have a lot more dirt in it than my 100lb bag did (having bought both).

I have it in my 30 and its great, do wash it well though.

I like the regular construction sand by quickcrete, there's a lot more variance in grain size so it looks a bit more natural. The downside is that you have to wash it more, but really, not that many times more

...or try pool filter sand.

play sand is great for tanks. i've got it in my 2.5 planted and my 'big fish' tank where my oscar lives and even when he does his ever endearing 'oscar beserk' dance, lol, hardly any of it stays suspended in the water long enough to be sucked into the filters.

as others have said...... wash it, wash it, then wash it some more! lol.
