I have two questions. I'm looking for a new HOB filter, as my current one is too loud (Marineland H.O.T. Magnum.) I was wondering what you would recommend. I have had penguins in the past, but the biowheel on them is a little too loud. I've heard good things about the Aquaclear, and was looking into the aquaclear 200. Its for a 29 gallon tank with 2 convicts and some babies, so its nowhere near overstocked. (The babies have another tank to grow up in once they get about a month old). Its in a bedroom, so being silent is my number one priority.

My second question is this: I was doing a water change today, and I noticed my bottle of Prime smelled like rotten eggs. Does prime go bad? I've only had it for about a month, so its not that old. The lid was on tight, so I don't know what happened. I don't go around smelling chemicals, so maybe its always smelled like this, but I doubt it. I'm actually kind of disappointed with the stuff, I've heard so many good things about it in the past, but now I'm worried about what I'm putting into my tank.

Thanks for the responses everybody.

Cant say anything about the prime but I would go with an AC 70 (300) instead of the AC 50 (200) and I think they are very quite

The question would have to be how much louder is the AC 70 compared to the AC 50. I'm a fan of overfiltration myself, but I don't know if its necessary on a tank so lightly stocked. Even with 30 babies, there isn't much of a bioload. If the noise is about the same, then I'll get the 70, but if the bigger motor is a lot louder than its not worth it.

prime is very stinky. I would go with an ac, I have one on a tank in my bedroom and its pretty darn quiet. You can't overfilter so go with the biggest you can afford since they have an adjustable flow.

Your Prime is still good....it is just the way it smells...surprised you didnt notice when you first bought and opened the bottle.

I'm running 2 HOT Magnums and can't hear a thing from them. They're absolutely quiet.

i got a penguin 350 on my 30g its not the wheels that make noise its the sound of the running water, but i like that sound anyways.
What about a internal filter of some kind ?

the ac 50 and 70 use the same watt motors, they might have similar noise levels. I use the ac 50 on my 29 gallon, nice and quiet, plenty of filtration.

No prime doesn't go bad...there might even be black specks in it and it's usual....check out their FAQ page on seachem.com

I have whisper 20-40 and the only thing I hear from it is my co2 diffusing in it.
