purple parrots (?)

Purple parrots are dyed fish - meaning it is an albino variety that has been stripped of its slime coat and dipped in purple dye to give it coloration.

These fish do not live very long or healthy lives as a result of the torture they suffered.

Regular blood parrots (the orange red non-dyed variety) can become territorial with age, but generally may be kept with other mid-size community fish. Minimum tank for adults would be about 55 gallons, they get to be 8" or so.

purple blood parrots are probably dyed (there is a version of blood parrot that is really blood red, and is called the "purple" parrot) if they are flourescent colored. do not buy them. they are going to be stunted and disease ridden, and will die an early death.

real blood parrots are "naturally" an orange color and they grow to about 8 inches. if you eant a blood parrot, gen an undyed one, and you will need at least a 55 gallon.

IME, they dont get very aggressive unless they "breed." i have one with angels, tetras and corydoras and i havent had any problems so far and he is at 6"

are these community fish and how big do they get?

Please stay away from these fish if they are dyed. It is a common practice and there is a good chance your fish will suffer stunted growth and be disease prone. As for their temper, I have two blood parrots (undyed of course) And they are super peaceful, however I did post on here that I had a problem with two smaller fish in tank disapearing. So make sure their tank mates are not too small. They like all other fish have individual personalites. My two are complete hogs, love to eat get attention and be hand fed. They pay no attention to my dwarf gourami, or my rainbow shark they share a tank with. However my danio and female betta disapered with out a trace. But please once again, if they are dyed stay away and boycott the LFS that is selling them.

the ones that i saw at the lfs were not dyed. they were red like the info that i read on the blood parrots. i saw the picture that was posted and they didn't look anything like what i saw in the lfs. maybe they just used the wrong name on the label.

This week I bought two teeny tiny parrots, obviously not dyed--natural colors of vertical black and gray stripes on one, the other is dark brown with several naturally-occuring black horizontal spots. Cute as can be.

You could get them if they are purple due to their diet like the ones at my LFS they dye the food colours then feed it to the parrots which naturaly dyes the parrots. Still bad though.

Not to steel the thread but does anyone know of a source for undyed Jellybean cichlids? Ive found some that are purple dyed ones like the OP stated... but can not source any that are not dyed. Thanks
