It seems I live much of my hobby in print - between AC, other forums and books, there's one thing I haven't learned: how the heck to pronounce some of the Latin names of plants! It's important to me so I don't feel like an idiot when I go to the LFS, so if anyone can help out, that would be great.

I know that the word Wendtii is pronounced WENT-ee-eye, but I've only heard one person say Cryptocoryne out loud and he pronounced it crip-TOC-or-een. Is this correct?
Here are some of the other words I'd love to know how to pronounce correctly:

Aponogeton ulvaceus
Cabomba piauhyensis
Cryptocoryne
Echinodorus bleheri
Echinodorus angustifolius
Hydrocotyle verticillata
Riccia fluitans

If anyone feels like providing the phonetic spelling, I'd appreciate it :)

This is something I think most people struggle with, and it seems everyone has their own way of pronouncing scientific names. I'm curious about the correct pronunciations as well.

The only person I've ever heard say the word "wendtii" pronounced it "wenth".

I can only give you how I *personally* say them as I've not studied enough latin to know what is "proper."

a PAWN o JET en ul VAYSCH us
ka BOMB a (wont try the rest!)
cript o CORE een
ek in o DOOR us bleh HEAR ee
ek in o DOOR us an GUST ah fole ee us
hydro CO tile ver tiss i LAHT a
risha (flue ee tans?)

I am a disgrace to the phonetic alphabet...but I dont know where to find the characters! My English Lit and Ling. profs would kill me!

EDIT: Well! I Just looked in the Oxford English Dictionary to see if I could find the latin roots or diminuitives of the roots...so I looked up "Echino." And I did not need to find its ties to tapeworm!!! (If you're wondering why I say this, look at my biggest fears thread in GCC! )

I had this problem when I was learning about plants, I first realized it when I was making a list of the plants I was going to buy....I could spell out each on fine but when someone asked me what I was getting, all I could do is show them the list!

This gets me the most when it comes to Cichlids....its one of the main reason why I haven't learned much about Africans, they almost all have scientific names only.

I think we should have little audio clips next to each name in the profiles section. It would help out a lot!
