Problems with a Marineland C-360

I've been away at college and my Dad has been really awesome in taking care of my 75 gallon while I've been away. I came back to visit for Easter and since winter break my C-360 started leaking air bubbles into the tube back into the tank and making a surging noise, I'm assuming from the bubbles. This filter had been set up for almost 2 years when this started happening so maybe its time for new parts? I took it apart (just the top off like I would for maintenance) and all the O-rings seemed good. When I put the lid back on it started leaking a little water from the left side clamp and front clamp. I don't know what could be causing this besides the O-rings and my dad and I have checked all of them a dozen times at this point. Fortunately I have a second filter running on the tank that can run it on its own, ironically an Aquatop knockoff of the C-360. If anyone has any idea of what could be causing this or how to fix it I would very much appreciate it! Thank you!

Josh

A lose hose connection could be letting air in. For the canister O-ring use some food safe O-ring lube or a bit of Vaseline and it will probably be fine.

I'd replace the O-rings...You may have pinched one at one time and you can't see the damage. Also check the seating area for anything like sand or something that may not let it seal completely. A good coating of Vaseline never hurts...been doing that for 30+ years on all my Mags. Don't just lube the main head O-ring, hit all of them.

At the 2yr point, it would be wise to order yourself a new C-360 seal kit. You can find them on eBay or the likes for ~$12.50 shipped. I apply silicone plumber's grease to the seals on my filters. I've had one C-360 in service for a little over a year.

As far as air inside the canister, pumping the prime button while it's running and/or tilting the canister can help purge that.

I used vaseline on all of the O-rings and it helped a little but it's still pulling air, I've got a new set coming on Monday so hopefully that'll fix it. Thanks for the help!

I doubt if the canister top O-ring is causing the air problem. I was just talking about it leaking water after you put it back together.

A hose barb connection, especially on your return side, that is just a bit lose can suck air without leaking water. I have had it happen before. Generally all I had to do was tighten the hose clams a bit or take it off and seat it again and get the clamp tight. If your filter is not set up with hose connections then I would need to think it over again.

If the unit is constantly returning bubbles to the tank, it's got to be sucking air from the suction side. Like said, it's not the big o-ring, because that portion of the filter is under pressure and will leak. If you just hear air within the unit, it just hasn't been purged completely.

Just a thought...

"When I put the lid back on it started leaking a little water from the left side clamp and front clamp."

Please check out what those clamps do....it might change some folks statements....

Ok, I give up. Is there something special about this particular type of clamp?

The clamps are just what secure the lid onto the section that actually holds media and water. I was just saying that's where the water is coming from. It's hard to see where the water is actually coming from as all of the seals are enclosed. Freshy, I know that it has to be pulling air from somewhere as it's a lot more air than could have gotten trapped in there. I'm really hoping that it is the O-rings because I'm at college and I don't see my dad being able to do any repairs besides that.
