i just realized one of my bamboo shirmp has eggs. she is in a 20 gallon filtered established tank with 4 neon tetras, 4 glolite tetras, and a gourami. there is one other bamboo shirmp in there with her. i know she is pregnant because she is fanning her eggs and they are red/brown colored. is there any way i can have her have these babies and they survive? is this usual for them to get pregnant? i read something about increasing salinity and stuff but i couldnt find too much information.

i have had ghost shimp that had eggs but i think they ended up getting sucked into the filter or eaten by my female betta (the tank they were in). thanks.

btw other names for the bamboo shrimp are: Asian Filter Shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp, Wood Shrimp, Fan Shrimp

It is possible for shrimp to carry the sperm from a male for a while, but it is also possible that the eggs are not fertilized.

If they are viable, the will need to be raised in increasing salinity (as they mature through the various larval stages). There is next to no documentation on bamboo shrimp breeding, in captivity and in the wild. I would use Amano shrimp breeding as a template. There are a few well documented cases of Amano shrimp breeding in the web.

Good luck!

lol thanks. i know she has something i can tell, dunno if they are ferilized or not. like i said i have two bamboos in that tank, the one that is bigger is the pregnant one, so maybe its a male and a female. i thought she had molted, because she had her filters closed and close to her body, then i saw the eggs.

You can find information about sexing these guys at the petshrimp.com varieties page. If you dig through their forums you can also find info on attempts to breed these guys.
