A little quick background first. A week or so ago, I noticed I could not find my male bristlenose pleco. He is pretty shy though, so I wasn't too worried. A couple days later, I looked in the large output tube for the sponge filter, and it looked like he has gotten stuck in there and died, as his fins were kinda tattered. I pooped the tube off, however, and he swam away. I noted that he looked very skinny, but I didn't know how long he might have been stuck in there, and figured he would plump back up soon enough. Well, he has continued to be rather sunken bellied, and seemed to be acting a little odd (not hiding as much, kinda lethargic). Today, I noticed what seems to be some sort of growth in his mouth. I can't tell if it is a tumor, or a fungus, or a bacterial mass, or WHAT it is. He looks fine elsewhere; eyes are bright, skin looks healthy.

Hopefully someone here can provide me with some insight on treating this.

The tank is 25 gallons. I can run water tests later, but it should be fine. I do weekly water changes of 25-50%. The tank is stocked with the breeding pair of BN plecos, around 12 chili rasboras, maybe 5 cherry shrimp, a few amanos, 4 or 5 brigs, an oto, and maybe 15-20 very small baby bristlenose, all around 1 in. Nothing new has been added for months.

Here are photos of the growth, and you can also see how skinny he is. It seems to be preventing him from eating...

Can't really tell if it is a lump or an ulcer. Can you clarify?

I honestly can't tell. I'm not sure if it is his skin that is swollen and discolored, or something else growing ON his skin. I am considering CAREFULLY probing the mass, to determine what it is. If it is soft and removable, I would like to get some of it off. But for all I know, he has gotten a splinter or something, and this is some kind of infection. If that is the case, not much I can do...

I am sorry that I can offer no assistance. I don't see any point of entry for a splinter/foreign matter except for the top of the lip--I can see a itybity black area but that may just be an artifact of the camera/flash. It looks bad so I don't think there is any problem with you trying to probe the area. A bit of clove oil in some water will serve as anesthesia--but you already know that. Good luck Bio.

columnaris maybe?

Poor poppa BN =[

Can you see the area when the fish is not pressed up against the glass — like from the side? I'm wondering if it appears to have much depth, fuzzy edges, anything that can help determine if it is a lump or a fungus-y growth.

Sorry, that's not much help, I know. :(

Man...so hard to tell...personally, I would move it to its own QT and observe what you can.....

I will get him set up in a nice little QT, and I think I will also try to probe the mass, to see what the consistency of it is. I have been wanting a microscope, and this would be the perfect time to have one... :/ Too bad I don't have 200$ to spare. I wish school was in so I could use theirs....but I will make do.

Well, found him dead this morning. :( Now I am down my breeding male... I will have to decide the direction of the tank from here I guess. Still no idea what it was, but it seems to have prevented him from eating. Poor little guy. Unfortunately, he was very shy to begin with, so I didn't notice anything was wrong till it was too late. Thank you all for trying to help me, it was worth a shot!
