One of my plecos dorsal fin has finally split. He has always had a small hole in his fin but now its split all the way down (now looking like two dorsal fins, if you know what I mean). Anyways, I'm not sure if he has had a case of fin rot or if it was just an accident. Also, I was wondering if an injury like this would heal? Oh, and the hole in his fin never looked moldy or icky, just like he was poked by a needle and it left a hole there.

My pleco has that to... What kind of fish do you have it might be one of them??

Just put in some aquarium salt, 1 tbsp per 5 gallon, turn up the heat to 83 and the fin will heal in a couple of days. Dont use any of the melacrap. And be sure to do water changes to get your water quality at its best.

Get some MelaFix. As seen here: http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=28157;category_id=2233;pcid1=;pcid2= It will help your fish recover faster and better. Treat as per the bottle.

High heat and salt wont do anything. There's no infection to kill.

Do you have a pleco with this problem?

Ok thought so, I do have a pleco that was chewed on and he healed very quickly using this method. like in 3 days. Or you can put in the tea tree oil and keep your fingers crossed that it does not do harm to the rest of the fish and plants.

plecos are most likely to be injured by getting caught in tank decorations and thrashing around to get free. tank size? pleco size? any even slightly pointy objects?

Have you read about this problem? Maybe one site out of 100 say to use salt. Salt is not the fix for everything.

You know, I dont need to go and read books, I was raising fish before you were even making hershey squirts in your diapers. What is you experience with fin chewing? You did not mention what you saw work in your tank for this condition. So go back to your search engines, and books, and fantasy world. I live in the real world, and speak of real life experiences.

in bob's world, salt is God. i thought we knew this?
