I have a question.....

I had a SW tank that had a plastic hollowed out rock in it for about 3 months. I ended up having my water go terribly out of whack causing me to have to have my fish "fish sat" while I tried to get my water back in order. I ended up giving up (SW too expensive) and tearing the tank down. When I took this rock out of the tank, the water that was up inside of it had such a fowl odor it smelled up the whole house. I now think that is what caused my tank to crash.

Has anyone had any bad experiences with hollowed out aquarium decorations making their water paremeters go out of whack making their whole tank crash? I am fixing to set up my first FW tank and don't want to make the same mistake. :help:

It could have been the plastic rock or all the waste sitting inside of the plastic rock.

Before you put something in your tank its a good idea to boil it. I do it with fake plants, rocks, etc.

No, I know it was the water up inside the rock. That is why I was wondering if anyone had ever had that problem with freshwater. I rinsed the decoration really well but , I did not boil it. I don't think it was caused from the decoration itself but from the stagnet water up inside of it.

that makes me worry because I have one of those in my tank too. what kind of water problems did it create so I can watch for them.

Everything was high, Ammonia and Nitrites (I get them mixed up--whichever is the bad on) I was doing twice a day water changes and still nothing helped. Then when I decided to tear down the tank (after selling all of my fish) and lifted up the rock you could smell it before I even got the rock totally lifted up and all of the water out. I had heard someone in the SW forum thought that that is what killed all of his fish and he took out the decoration and hasn't had a problem since. I was just wondering if anyone dealing with FW has had the same experience. I know FW fish can usually tolerate declining water paremeters better than SW fish can. The decoration that I bought is usually used for FW but I liked the color and the 3 holes for the fish to swim through and now I don't know if I should buy anything like that again and mess the tank up and lose more fish.

i've never had any problems like that with my ornaments. maybe some food got accumulated under it, or a fish died in it?

also whenever i do a water change, i usually take them out and rinse them under tap water because the decorations are good places for crud and crap to catch and accumulate.

could have been an air bubble which then caught water, debris and rotting food etc...sat for a while and stagnated?
