Has anyone here ever attempted a planted BiOrb? I think it would be possible and I have some plans to get around the problems, just wanted to hear your thoughts.
 
I have a 4 gallon "Baby" BiOrb. I have it planted with a clump of Java Moss and some Najas. The only limiting factor in making a planted BiOrb is the lighting. The BiOrbs use a small halogen bulb for lighting. You would probably be limited to low light plants. Also, the filter system is a hybrid undergravel filter, and only large substrate will allow it to work.

So, as long as the plants don't require substrate (Java Fern, Anubias) and will tolerate low light, it should work.
 
What about pots? I could make round pots to go on the gravel with plant growing substrate in them for rooted plants. I realise about the light though.
 
A big limiting factor about the bio-orbs is the surface area is so small. That restricts the normal gas exchange, which should have an effect on plants too.
 
What size BiOrb are you thinking about? If it's an 8 gallon, it might work. There's not a lot of room at the bottom, and you will need to be able to move the plants to access the filter. Another problem with the BiOrb (in my opinion) is the fact that the light runs off of the transformer that also runs the pump. There's no way to hook it into a timer, so you have to remember to turn the light on and off to regulate the light cycle.

I don't have a timer on any of my planted tanks! Thanks for you r help as well :) I'll try it, but the lfss around here don't have plants like that so wish me luck in finding some :)
 
I set up a biube for my ex with plants. it was a pain. I wound up making my own light to make it work. it was a paint, and frankly isn't worth the time, stress, or hassel imo. I Then got her some really nice looking plastic and we both were happy haha!
