I am wanting to place a pleco into a 75 gallon aquarium. Wanting something that stays relatively small as most plecos grow quite large. Someone was telling me about something called a PITBULL PLECO. ANyone ever heard of this? If so what is their scientific name or other common names?

I think they're parotocinclus jumbo. I bought 2 but both died in quarantine. I don't know if they're delicate but I have only seen them the 1 time.

Yep, scientific name is Parotocinclus jumbo. Their LDA number is 25. Here is planetcatfish's log on them: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=236. They are cute little plecs that are obviously closely related to the otocinclus. They say to keep them in groups.

I plan on having some of these guys in my new tank.

Planet Catfish actually had them as catfish of the month :) Here's the link to that article:

Hi,

I recently got two of these fish. They aren't territorial at all, and they are always following each other around. If possible, you should get at least two (mine were the only ones I've ever seen, and the store no longer stocks them).

When I got them, they had ich and were undernourished (all they had to eat was leftovers from the platies in their tank and whatever algae they could find in the bare, algaeless tank). But they recovered and are now plump, active, and ich-free. So I guess my limited experience is that they are fairly hardy.

By the way, they love blanched zucchini slices and commercial veggie rounds, so it shouldn't be too hard to get them eating well.

Just make sure you are getting Parotocinculus jumbo, as I think maybe some other species are occasionally called "pitbull pleco." The links other members gave should help with this.

Hope this helps!

Hey there...far from an expert on these little guys but they are great. I have 4 of them...I placed three in 90g and one in 10 g. They acclimated great and are pretty active. They dont seem to hide like my other otocinclus do. Been feeding them an algae wafer every other day or so and they love em. They are HUGE algae eating machines. Love em....and best of all they stay SMALL :) and never stop searching for algae and dont seem to hurt any of my plants. They were called pitbull plecos at the store I bought em at and the person above is right ..they called them parotocinclus jumbo on the scientific name.
Have had them 4 weeks now and wouldnt hesitate to purchase again if I needed more algae eaters.

And they get a +5 on the cuteness scale...Love watching them bury themselves in the substrate....just be careful vacuuming tank!

sometimes you will see chaetestoma sp. labelled as bulldog plecs. not exactly the same but close enough to get confused. better known as the rubberlip or rubbernose plecs, always available in petsmart. mine can be quite mean. fights the bichir for pellets and over 3 days when my black moor had to be emergency-housed in my 50g he shredded the goldie's fins and tore off scales. not a pretty sight. occasionally rumbles for territory.
