Hey guys,
I was told to use these for a Pop-Eye infection, and that it was 100% Reef Safe..

I put some in last night, and some in this morning, and all my snails have fallen off my glass and alot of my LTAs are shrunken up and look very unhealthy.. Same goes to my Frogspawn..

Anyone used it?

Melafix a while long while ago... bad idea... just bad. talk about stressing out the system. All I know is all my corals anenome were not happy. The only things not affected..my fish.

The only use I have for Melafix now is using it in a cup of tank water to 1 min dip my corals. There has been some members of a site I am at mostly that have tested this on SPS to remove red bugs. And it works.

maybe its just better you set up a 10 gallon med tank for fish needing treatment...

UV sterilizer would be the only thing I would add to my tank if I wanted to clean up the water column of nasties.

You may have better advise from another poster. My fish have never caught a disease yet. I used melafix for another reason..a stupid one..I wish not to go into detail over :mad2: just bad times then.

hey thanks alot for the link bud! Im gonna read up on it now... still havent used that stuff today... did a 50% water change though, hopefully THAT should do sumthing...

I used it many many times in my display tank (20+ times just on my tank over the 15 years in the hobby) that has over $10,000 worth of corals and all I have is snails for a CUC and never once had 1 dead snail. I did notice, like you, my LPS coral (Duncans in my case) did not appear "happy" when I medicated the tank.. scared me the first time like I am sure you were scared, but other than shrinking up and looking bad they all came back just fine after medication was over. I have definately used both those meds with 100% success rate on popeye if I start using it immediately after noticing the problem. I would never recommend or suggest something I haven't used myself with good success... or if someone wanted to use something I didn't have good success with I would mention that as well (thinking of Kick-Ich).

Well, pop-eye is simply an external symptom that shows up for a number of reasons, including both parasitic and fungal infections. If you have a fungal related pop-eye infection, than it'll work great, if its caused by parasites, it wont have much long-term effect because the pop-eye will simply return after dosing stops.

I would say the meds are fine to use with fowlr systems. But i've experienced the same thing you have in a reef aquarium. If you must use it, use it in bath/dip form or in a QT.
