ANybody ever own a Pike or bass?? I heard pike are really cool in a fish tank..

I hope you have a very large tank. Pike can be 3 feet or more and bass can be well over a foot.

There is a fish called a peacock bass that gets very large and can be found from time to time. It does have very nice colors but is just too big for the aquarium.

I'm not sure how long it will be till your bass and pike outgrow the tank. For the long run, you might consider a pike cichlid or a jaguar cichlid. Jaguar cichlids slightly resemble a smallmouth bass. They have a similar type mask when they are young but there colors are a little different. They are more black than brown.

Pike (Northern Pike, Muskellunge, Pickerel - Esox sp.) don't generally do much but sit there until feeding. They're ambush predators. Sure they thrash smaller fish, but it's usually over in an instant. Bass (Micropterus sp.) are a little more likely to cruise around and pick at stuff. Keep the tank unheated and you could have them for several years in a 55 gallon tank. Check local laws regarding keeping game fish. If there is a size limit, legally you can't keep them under that size.

there are alterninitives to owning a pike or gar...

here are a couple that stay around the 1 foot range and look neat......

silver pikes....sometimes labeled wrong as freshwater baracudas which u`ll find on alot of sites....

and a bunch of characins

needle nose characin
brown pike characin
spotted brown pike characin
these guys stay around the 1ft and less area

but most fish simular to pikes grow around 2ft plus...

also i am unsure if we are aloud to post links to other sites!?!

if yes i could show u a cool predatory site...
with a bunch of pikes and simular fish and compatabile species

I dont have either yet...

I might get a pike though....

WHat about Fresh water Barracuda?? Whats the word on those puppys?

I think grass pickerels will stay small enough to keep in a smaller (55 gallon-ish) tank. That would be a nice alternative to a larger pike. Good luck finding one for sale. You may see one on aquabid.com if you're lucky.

FW baracudas look like baracudas.......
another name is yellowtail barracudas.....
type that up in google
they get around 7-9 inches depending on space and the amount of water changes.....
and their predatory obviously.....
their fun to watch when there eating there lightning quick....
and i belive the regualr priee of one is around $20

kinda pricey

but in a school

in a big tank like a 125.....
with some barteri swords and ferns.....
they`d make 1 hell of a display tank...

Bass like to jump so you better have a heavy lid. I had a friend who had a bass (10") and he had a piece of plywood with 2 bricks on top of his aquarium to keep it in. They are also ambush predators. They tend to just sit there until the food passes close enough then 'BAM!!', its gone.

Sorry, but there is NO WAY you can/should keep Bass or Pike for that matter ina 55 gallon tank! you could keep 3 sunfish at the most! If you want to keep this fish you'll need a minimum of at least 300 g's for the bass - the pike would need even more they get huge! And Muskies, forget about it they shouldn't be kept in anything less than a public aquarium! - you need a ton of space for these wild fish - they are predators and won't thrive in a small aquarium! You can't even keep Oscars in a 55 g nevermind largemouth bass or Pike! Pike get huge, they can't be kept in a 55g they get as long as the tank for crying out loud!
