fish worries
Hi

I recently introduced a Pictus Catfish to my aquarium. Last night i watched as he continually swam upwards in to the water current from the filter. He did this for about 3hrs. When the tank lights went off he then started swimming around normally. I am worried that this may be a sign that there is low oxygen in the water. However all othe fish appear fine.

Does anyone know if this is a worrying sign or just normal behaviour.

thanks
Rob

I don't have a pictus, but several of my fish enjoy swimming in the current 8) Michelle

Are his fins up or down? Is he gasping for air - rapid gill movement, mouth open wide, hanging at the surface? Does he show any other signs of disease or stress? If not, observe him carefully for a few days. Watch to see whether he is being chased. It could just be the new environment
My 4 pictus enjoy each others company. He might be more comfortable in a group of his own species - even though they do tend to hassle each other. Mine chase but never harm anyone.
Also watch to see whether he eats. If he is eating it's another good sign that he is fine.

Thanks guys

he is still doing it but i just think its for fun. He is eating healthily. He does hide a bit though. Keeps under the filter if not swimming up in to the current from it. He does not appear stressed by other fish.

water temp is 26
all nitrate levels etc are fine.
tank is 80l

I had a lone pictus catfish a long time ago, and now I have a group of 7 of them. I find they are much more active and outgoing in groups, when I had a single he did hide quite a bit. Do you have one of the 4-lined ones, or one of the spotted ones? an 80L tank is probably too small for a group of pictus, they are pretty hyperactive fish.

It is a spotted one.

he appears ok. I have only had him less that a week. Could it be that he is getting used to his new tank?
