Okay, so I work at Ted's Montana Grill and we serve NY half sour pickles. They come to the restaurant in five gallon paint buckets so I figured I'd take a few home and give them a good soak for a few hours in hot water that had been hit with a few cups of bleach.

Here I have now repeated the process thrice over the last three nights, and there isn't the slightest decline in pickle smell!

So I'm wondering - should I discard the buckets? I mean I do assume they're safe to use but I don't want them stinking up the place.

Does anyone think they know how I can get rid of the smell?? :)

I wouldn't think so. I have had large glass jars that once held pickles, and after use of use, not for fishie stuff, they still had a faint pickle smell. Must be the pickling agents that are hard to get rid of.

I would use them. Have you tried dusting them with baking soda or filling them with water and adding baking soda? Even if it doesn't work, a few rinses should be all that is needed. I've used buckets from restaraunts that had that pie filling or ice cream topping. I just rinsed them a few times with hot tap water. Granted they smelled nicer than pickles...but I like pickles too :)

Ok secrets out ..I have used Burger King Pickel buckets for years. A friend of my wife manages one. The smell wont get in your tank but it will stay with the buckest awile. I rinse them well and begin using , again ths is just my opinion. Buy a new bucket at a hardware if your not comfortable with the idea, but i have never myself had any problems..

People also use 1 gallon pickle jars to hatch angel fry in.
The most the vinegar will do is lower your ph in your tank a little that is the main reason the vinegar is safe to clean a tank with it harmless I would however not dump a jar of pickle juice in your tank

i also use burgerking pickle buckets, set them outside on a sunny day rinsed and let the sun cure them a few days, i use these for all my animals 5 outside dogs, and horses, and a few for the fish tanks inside they are just fine.. mine don't smell after a few days outside.. just the fresh one smell, after airing out in the sun they are just fine never done anything else with them.. give it time.. just outside in sun.
