They said they won't take in any fish if the fish weren't bought there. If the fish were bought there, then they'd take it back for free.

Anyone gave them fish for store credit before ? Perhaps the employee was talking out her *** ? Maybe it's just the smaller chains or mom & pop stores that do the credit ?

I rescued about 30+ fish and would like to get rid of some. I could use some fish supplies instead.

petsmart won't even take back fish without a receipt. If you have a receipt, you get the typical 15 days. Petco will let you put a fish up for "adoption" if you don't want it or its bad for your tank, but they don't offer credit either. I would say your best bet is to hit the LFS's. smaller, privately owned ones. If you have some fish that would have demand in the market, I'm sure you'll find some interest, but if you've just got a bunch of convicts, then you're probably out of luck. what kind of fish do you have that you're trying to get rid of?

I've never gone to PetSmart to try to swap for store credit but they do take their fish back I suppose. You're better off going to a mom & pop store anyway, they are more likely to go to good homes rather than someone just spiking an idea in their minds to start a tank and dump fish in after a day or two..... Being that you saved the fish, to me, it makes more sense to place them where they have a better chance anyway...... and you can get store credit.

Most LFS will sell to anyone anyway but you're rght, perhaps the smaller LFS would attract more conscientious fishkeepers than the chains.

I'm trying to get rid of some serpae tetras (too quarrelsome), maybe the diamond tetras, giant danios (too agressive) and maybe the angelfish (I don't have a suitable tank for her gentle nature). I'm not really sure yet; I just know I have a bunch of incompatible fish (see sig). :thud:

the big chain stores usually dont do trade ins, are there any smaller Lfs's around where you are?

I'd go to a small LFS when it's not crowded & not the day before a shipment comes in (try a Thu or Fri AM?) and offer them the fish. As long as they aren't loaded w/ what you're offering, they may give you 1/2 retail in credit for supplies... That's what I'd shoot for.

I took a Jewel cichlid back once to our Petsmart and they gave me store credit, but I had bought it there, had the receipt, and it was within 2 weeks. Our's will also take down your name and phone number if you have fish to give away and will call you if someone comes in looking for that kind of fish (even if they sell them. They offered me free blood parrots once but I decided against them due to tank space.).

We have privately owned LFSs here that will always give you store credit for fish. So I'd try those kinds and avoid the large chains.

I was talking to an employee at Petsmart and she told me their company policy is not to accept donated pets, even if bought there. She said that day, two people had come in wanting to get rid of a fish and a hamster. The first was so disgusted that he just threw the bag on the floor and stormed out. The second flushed the hamster down the store toilet!!!! People make me sick.

i returned one of my live fish cause he was terrorizing my tank. They gave my store credit but the slip said "Must be used on the date issued". And i didnt see that till i got home. It sucked real bad.

I've gotten lots of free fish just standing around at Petsmart. They say "we can't take them back" I say "I'll take those."
