At petsmart i saw some fish that looked like kenyi, but was'nt i believe. The kenyi tank was next to assorted tank so i could see a differnce. They were blue with black stripes. Could they be saulosi or demasoni? I'm lookin for saulosi. I do not want demasoni as i heard they are real aggressive for their size. On the tag somewere after assorted africans it said pseudotropheus, so i'm guessing their all from that family or speices.
Maybe a petsmart employee reading can help. Thanks...

yea there not very trusty

Well i've been to a couple of petsmart's in my area. They usually do not have the best of selections. I've bought my yellow labs, krib and others from their with no problems. I bought 2 of my small yellow labs from small assorted tank. Their full lab. Awhile back i even had pics put on a thread and members said they looked like full labs. At one of the petsmart's a manager told me the fish in the assorted tanks are from the pseudotropheus species; which it states in small print on assorted africans tag. They said they just recieve them like that mixed varietys from vender. I was told there not hybreds.
Then again i'm sure it may be possible that their may be hybreds in some tanks once in a while. I don't work their so i really don't know. And these stores variey when it comes to fish care and knowledge. Some stores are better than others.
My tank is a 55g. I'm trying to have a mbuna community which concists of aliitle more peaceful mbuna such as yellow labs, rustys, and soon to add maybe a saulosi if i find some in my area.

I've had mixed luck with my local petsmart. I managed to get a yellow lab which ended up being a hybrid, but I also got two pure ones.

Any chance you could take a photo of the fish in question?

If you're looking specifically for saulosi, you may want to acquire them from a reputable breeder or hobbyist.

My cell phone doent have a good camera. There is one place in the area that maybe able to order saulosi.
I just didnt want to acidently get a demasoni instead of a saulosi if i choose to by from an assorted tank. They have totaly diff personalities.

If not intending to breed, in case of hybreds, then i dont see anything wrong with getting fish from assorted tanks. The bad part may be that i may not be sure what i'm getting, since diff. fish have diff. agression levels.

How many are you planning on getting?

Demasoni aren't that bad if there is only one of them in the tank as well as no other blue/black vertically striped tank mates. However, demasoni tend to be one of the more expensive types of mbuna and aren't usually found in the assorted tanks, so it's probably a safe bet it's not one.

Demasoni and saulosi, however, aren't the only striped pseudotropheus species. Could be a hybrid or an aggressive pseudotropheus elongatus (which you may want to avoid if planning on a low-end aggressive tank).
