Every petsmart I go to, they always have these cichlids with the tag "Assorted African Cichlids". I was wondering if anyone knew the exact species that is a part of this group, perhaps someone that works/worked there? They look fairly interesting, but there is no way I am going to buy them unless I know generally, what I am buying. Any ideas?

Pictures will do it. Most likely those are hybrids of different mbunas and haps. A lot of Lake Malawi cichlids are cheaper than those of Lake Tanganyika.

I'd stay away from the assorted tank and buy fish that you know what they are. Alot of the fish in the assorted tanks are hybrids and most people frown on keeping those. Africans (especially Mbuna) will usually breed readily and its not recommended to sell fry that are from hybrids (or are hybrids...). :)

If you want Africans and know what you are looking for, check Aquabid for breeders.

Ya, I'm mostly looking for the ones you can't readily find, I was just curious that maybe they had some species of interest. Oh well.

The assorted africans in petsmart are from the Pseudotropheus species or family. According to the tag, in which it reads in small print. At least at the petsmarts closer to me. I have purchased a few yellow labs from an assorted tank in the past. Mine are pure electric yellows. Well about 99% sure. I'm sure their is a possibility that their could be hybreds in some assorted tanks. May depend on store and vender they use. I would'nt let that stop anybody from buying these fish inless they intend on breeding and are not 100% fimilar with what fish they are purchasing. Now i've been to other fish only stores, in which i was told their could be some hybreds in their tanks. Some stores buy africans from vendors knowing of this possibility, and thus sell as assorted africans.

GO ALBINO OSCARS! they aren't as agressive as tiger oscars, but they look a lot cooler! (and then there are the red oscars which are also super awesome looking)

One thing about the assorted cichlids is they tend to be cheaper!:headbang2:
