I am curious if I would be able to deviate from the standard carbon filled filter inserts?

I am an AC HOB user and like to modify my filtration at times. I don't use carbon unless I need to clarify water or remove meds. Is it possible to use an Emperor cartridge or some other mechanical filter in the 350B?

Sure, you can do this - I do it myself :) I use foam from an AquaClear 70 and Biomax from, I believe a 70 as well. Two foam blocks (one on each side) with two bags of Biomax (again, one on each side) on top of the foam fits just right.

I do this for two reasons: #1, disposable media is just too expensive and #2, it clogs too easily and doesn't seem to be as effective at trapping debris as the foam blocks.

I don't have any experience with Aqueon HOB filters, but just find a store that sells AquaClear filters and their media. They come in different sizes:

So I'm sure you can find one that fits your Aqueon filter.

If it's a little big you can always cut it down to size, open cell foam like that cuts easily with a serrated knife. The Biomax also comes in a variety of sizes, best to leave it in the bag it is in since the big holes in it allow it to clean up easily vs. micron bags.

I believe Petsmart sells AquaClear filters and their media, possibly Petco as well. You can buy it online, but easier to just look and see for yourself which sizes would fit best. Might be helpful to measure the area behind your filter to see how much room you have to work with. It should be a neat fit, but you shouldn't have to jam the media in there which would restrict flow.

Hi RDTigger,

I'm not totally sure if this is what you are looking for but Marineland sells fillable media basket/cartridges for the pengiun 350b. I would send you a link to them, but I'm on my cellphone. You can find them on fosterandsmithaquatics.com under the marineland 350b filters. I use 4 media baskets for each of my 350b filled with poly-fil. I believe they are around $3.50 each and work great. Much cheaper than the carbon filter cartridges due to being refillable if necessary. I hope that helps.
