Loving this forum. Thanks for the recent help guys.
I have a question regarding Ranchu's:

and Pearl Scale:

I had a few experiences with Pearl Scales. Over and over they either get stuck or get sucked in by filters and even sometimes just die. These fish are ridiculously fragile for a Goldfish.

I was wondering if Ranchu's are the same way and if anyone can confirm from experience. I seen Ranchu's get rather large and in their own way, they are hardy. Not to mention, they are rare when it comes to finding them at your LFS... where I live anyways (Especially Veiltails: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzMvVLWmv1M ).

So my question is, are Ranchu's as fragile as Pearlscales? I'm basing this on the structure of the fish, small fins and plump body. But I can never be so sure.

Have never had much luck with the pearlscales either, now the "ranchu" have a couple in my pond. 1 had lost his/her eye to a HOB a few years ago but doesn't slow it down one bit. Otherwise both do well out there, always one of the first up for breakfast or dinner

Pearlscales are essentially selected to have dropsy. Not really but practically. They are one of the weakest goldfish out there.

Ranchu on the other hand can be very hardy if you get proper genetics. If you can get Japanese blood they will over winter in milder climates. If you get Hong Kong sourced fish they are not as hardy and do not live as long. Fish from Shanghai tend to be hardier as they have winters there.

PM me if you're looking for Ranchu, I might know where you can get a few ;)
