pearl gourami gender

Dont mean to hijack, but I have been debating getting some pearl gouramis. I want a more visible fish in my loach tank that will look stunning and stay more middle/upper as the loaches stay mostly lower/middle. I wanted a larger fish, 4" minimum and one that schools, or alteast stays roughly in a loose group.

Would a large group of pearls be ok, like about 8 or so? And do they sort of school? And in a large group is there an ideal m/f ratio or would it be ok to be mostly males? I really havent seen many female pearls at the lfs around here lately.

Pearl gouramis are one of the more peaceful gourami species, but getting two males of any kind of gourami is not a good idea unless you have numerous females. So I would probably go with 2 females, and if you do want a male, just get 2 females instead of one, so if you have an aggressive male, all the chasing won't be focused on one female.

And to answer your question loaches r cool, Pearl gouramis don't neccessarily 'school' but they will usually stay close to eachother. I would suggest that you have mostly females if you are to get 8 of them, but a good ratio would be 2 or 3 males to 5 or 6 females.

I havent decided on pearls myself, just was attracted to thier appearence. After doing some searching its surpriseing that no fish statistical site gave any info about ratios or schooling. Thanks for the advice! Though I am sure there are sites out there that do have the info I was looking for, but about the first dozen didnt.
