I decided it was a bad idea to keep a Fire Eel in a 55 gallon tank, so here I am, asking about Peacock eels. They're not as colorful, and they say they are very shy for a few months.

1. Decorations for the tank. I know they can easily abrade themselves on hard and sharp materials, so I wanna know what you use or what you think is best.

2. Eating habits. I here they are very, very picky eater, especially as juveniles. What do you feed them? It would be preferable if I didn't have to get a separate tank for live food.

3. Is a 55 a good size for a full adult?

4. I think a 55 is a great size, or so they say, so if that's true, how many eels could coexist in the tank? 3?

5. If I can comfortably fit 3 eels in there, are there any fish, preferably a larger, visible one, that can coexist with the eels?

6. What do you personally think about them? Please share your experiences with them!!

Thanks guys!

Kind of picky and you will probably have to target feed. Mine would accept all live foods, mainly shrimp, and also quite funnily ate shrimp pellets sometimes. Try feeding them frozen bloodworms, mysis or brine shrimp to start with. About $5 for a pack that'll last one peacock eel a lifetime at any chain or lfs.

3. Is a 55 a good size for a full adult? Very good size. More than appropriate.

4. I think a 55 is a great size, or so they say, so if that's true, how many eels could coexist in the tank? 3? I don't see why not. They do well in groups and normally don't go at each other at all, if they are the same size.

5. If I can comfortably fit 3 eels in there, are there any fish, preferably a larger, visible one, that can coexist with the eels? Big oddball fish. Anything community based that won't out-compete the eel for food.

6. What do you personally think about them? Please share your experiences with them!! Loved mine. He lived in an mbuna tank for a while actually. This was a massive noob mistake to mix it with them, but they all did just fine and I never saw a single cichlid go after him. They were too busy worrying about themselves, I suppose. Feeding him was a pain though so try target feeding with a baster or something small if you think it isn't getting proper sustenance.

Thanks guys![/QUOTE]

You're welcome, and welcome to AC!

i kept a 10: one in a 55 with a jack dempsey for a year without problems, just get them both small and let them grow up

1.
Driftwood, PVC, I used sand on the bottom as substrate.
2.
I feed mine frozen bloodworms, but it would also eat some of what my fish were eating (flakes, algae wafers, etc..)
3.
Yes, a 55 gallon is a very good size. When I had mine in my 20 it was too small.
4.
I think it depends on how many hiding places you have in the tank...
5.
I kept Cichlids with my eel
6.
It was a very interesting experience. It is definitely in my top 10 experiences with fish. I loved how it would slither around in the tank looking for food.

Good luck!
