Hi,

Need some advice with peace lilies?
I have them in my filters, to help with nitrate level, but so far they aren't really doing well. some leaves seem to be turning yelow/brown.
Do they need lots of light? my lily in a sump melted, it did not recieve any light except room light.
Do i need to dose with any ferts? my tanks nitrate level are 20 ppm and the other 40 ppm. besides weekly water change i added the lilies to help reduce nitrate level. how much lilies should i add to take care of about 40ppm nitrate?
i've already added an aquarium light for the plants.

thanks.

Peace lilies are not a true marginal plant, if the crown of the plant is submerged it will cause what you are describing. Just make sure that only the roots are submerged. They are a very low light plant so lighting is likely not the issue, I used to work with a girl who called them "closet plants" because, she said, you can keep them in a closet and they will do well. This is slightly exaggerated but its not far off. How many to add depends on the size of the plant, I would just check levels for a couple of weeks after adding one and see what it does. I would also continue to do water changes and not rely on the plants only. I would be interested to know how this works for you, please update with data.

thanks. I've added a plant into the sump and will provide it with aqurium light for 4-5 hours a day. I've made a 50% water change to my tank.

I'll post nitrate readings again after a week.

thanks.

It's hard to tell looking at the pic but it appears the crown, where the stems and roots meet, is submerged. If so I would raise the plant, maybe by adding more ceramic noodles, so just the roots are submerged. Good luck and keep us updated as to how it works.

Watersprite in your sump would work much better, IMO.

thanks Did a reasearch here in forum before and was told peace lilies are better in absorbing nitrates than water plants? :D

tried hornwort before but the leaves end up clogging my filters.

I'll try to add more plants and raise the crown above water. :D
