I was in the fish store yesterday and noticed these beautiful blue and pink fish, and when I looked at their names, it said small parrot fish 19.99
but they were blue and pink. I did some research today and heard from 2 people also that these fish are dyed at birth?:jaw: Stop the madness..
Personally I think thats cruel to do to a fish, and two, to mislead a customer not telling them they are dyed if its true. to have them revert back to natural color 2 months after being in your tank, is a little messed up.

Anyway are these good fish in a community tank? Do they play well with others? I.E. Angels, loaches, Tigerbarbs?

When there is a demand for these fish it happens. Now I dont have a big problem with blood parrots (there are hybrids btw) I have a problem with any dye-injected fish. I urge you to stay away from them as the process can be stressful for fish and can lead to health problems. "Natural" bp's (I know its an oxymoron) should be ok to get. From what I have heard they arent bad in community aquariums.

The unfortunate thing about BP's is that they are unpredictable. It is hard to say whether they are fine for the community tank or not. Yes, those colors such as violet, blue and green should indicate the fish is dyed.

Each cichlid has it's own personality and them being aggressive towards their tankmates or not would depend on the fish in question.

my parrot was and is fine with all the fish, some days he likes to bully the sevrum a bit, but I believe he is just letting him know he is boss. even though the sevrum is way bigger LOL!
died fish is way wrong!! never will I ever buy any.

They tattoo them and cut they're tails too. I think parrots are deformed enough to begin with but I guess not. It seems like every year they're doing something else to them, and no they wouldn't be selling them if they leached out weird chemicals that were going to harm your fish. I wouldn't doubt if the color all faded within a couple of months though, I'd imagine it couldn't stay with them 100% as they grow. I won't support any fish stores who sell these fish, the one store I continue to shop at that sells them I'm constantly yelling at for it. I'm not sure about your LFS but the workers at mind don't telling a customer the fish is tattooed or dyed. Mine has some that have hearts tattooed on them. I can't believe *******s would even by fish like that unless they didn't know.

I hate parrots to begin with.. but I don't think any fish should have to go through that. Parrots can be mean, they can be nice too. It just depends on the fish itself like most fish. I wouldn't put anything else in your tank though. You know how big your clown loaches are going to get right? They're also community fish and you shouldn't have less than 5.

Artificially colouring fish does not only stress them to the point of death. The syringes used to inject the ink are more often than not dirty, introducing bacteria and disease. If the stress and inability to fight off a nasty infection doesn't kill the fish it is likely that the ink making its way to the fish's liver and kidneys will. Surely no committed fish keeper would want this for their fish?
Example of a dyed fish...

Don't just boycott stores that supply these fish let them know that what they are doing is wrong (even if they are just supplying), tell them what effect it will have on the fish. You might sound like a jerk to them.. or a fish obsessed freak to others but the bottom line is it's wrong.

I'm amazed anyone buys such hideously deformed fish anyway- to think that people selectively breed fish to look like that (even without the awful dyed colours) is frightening.
