Other crazy ingredients of NoSalt

I bought NoSalt for K dosing, but I was wondering about some of the stuff in it. In addition to KCl, the ingredients list potassium bitartrate, adipic acid, fumaric acid, silicon dioxide and mineral oil. Since this product has been recommended here, none of these things are anything I should be concerned about adding to my tank? I was surprised actually--I was expecting straight KCl.

What the . . . I was JUST going to post the same thing!

Heh. Anyhow, the mineral oil ingredient threw me off, so I bought Morton Salt Substitute instead:

Potassium chloride, fumaric acid, tricalcium phosphate, and monocalcium phosphate.

Will that work okay or did I buy completely the wrong thing? I haven't used it and won't until I know I bought the right stuff.

I purchased the same kind (with those extra ingredients) some months back. At the time I too questioned if it was the correct stuff. I was told here that it was and have been using it ever since. :)

Hrm. Dunno, I just don't like the idea of dumping mineral oil -- in any amount -- in my tank.

It is conservative to be concerned with the materials added to your tank, that I will never argue against. But you do have to consider concentrations very carefully. Info is available on the toxicity of almost any material used in foodstuffs. research it and make up your own mind. But do not yell "fire" where there is none.

If you distrust the grocery store and pharmacy items (or are unwilling to do the admittedly painstaking research), buy the material from Greg Watson. His prices are low and his material is used by many, many hobbyists.

Roan you are not worried to be adding all those phosphates to your water?

No, I'm not worried because I'm not using it until I find out if it's suitable.

No one is yelling "fire", where do you get that? We are asking if such and such is okay to use. Why is that a problem for you?

Who said anyone was "unwilling" to do the research? That's quite the insinuation on your part, and I take exception to that comment.

Part of the research is asking here and if Greg Watson (no offense Greg) was the answer to everything then I doubt the sticky would be at the top of the forum.

I didn't notice anyone yelling at all, let alone "fire". I was just expressing surprise that there was more in the product than I was expecting, not that everybody should stop using it immediately. I also indicated that since many people here use it, it must be okay. Roan said she wasn't sure she wanted to use her product, not that everybody should stop using it.

Well, I thought the point of forums was so people could share their experiences, opinions, and the results of their research. That is why I come here, and that is why I am trying the product--because of the experience and research of other members here. Are you suggesting we should not ask for or post opinions here, that I should go off and do it on my own? What is the point of AC then?

Perhaps you misunderstood my post or I am misunderstanding yours, and if that is the case, I apologize.

Just to throw my 2 cents in.. and this relates in a round about way :)

I have been a Dialysis patient for 6 years now, my Kidneys don't work so I have no natural way to regulate my Bloodpressure.. Salt is a big issue in my diet especially since I can only drink a max of 3 cups liquid a day.. salt = buildup.. and bad for bloodpressure.

NoSalt, is a huge No-no for a dialysis patient because of "potassium bitartrate" .. I can't recall the exact reasons why but the nutritionist also told me it's not good for healthy people either..

So I would assume whats not ok for humans can't always be alright for fish?

But, then.. if it's not broken don't fix it may apply? .. If something works that's to say why change? Sounds like others have had good experience with it.. but personally if there are still alternatives I myself would probably try one.
