Can the white ribbon plant(dracaena sanderiana-I think it looks like a lucky bamboo plant). Told by the LFS it can be submersed...I now realize this is not completly accurate. My question is, in a 55g if I allow the leaves to break the surface will this plant thrive? dummy me for buying it!

i think that the leaves would have to be completely out of the water. you would probably be better off growing it in a pot

You could get one of those clear plastic boxes they use at the fish store for bagging fish. Hang it at the top of your tank on the inside, fill it up with some substrate and let the plant grow out of the top of your tank. It would probably look nice.

It sucks that stores sell those plants, its bad for the hobby. Too many people get bad advice and stock from stores!

Did the plant leaves grow out of the aquarium- so they essentially were submerged initially?

No, it was put in only once it was big enough. If you leaves are under the water, they will sooner or later rot away.
